Hello, I’m Emily Strong

I’m a lover of fantasy, Batman, and Disney; I’m a doodler, and a professional movie quoter… And I’m an English major!

Please enjoy this picture of my face.

Ever since I was young, I have loved to read and write. I read so much that my mom had to ground me from it! I started writing stories when I was elementary school, but I just need to work on finishing them. Someday I hope to be a published author, and I am also investigating the possibility of going into editing and publishing. This being my first semester here at BYU, I am considered a freshman. However, I was able to attend a community college during high school (In Tri-Cities, Washington) for dual credit, so I already have my Associates Degree. I am excited to be able to jump right into my major with the hope of being able to keep up with all the seasoned writers!

Some of my favorite literature is Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s Wheel of Time series

Forever dreaming about the beautiful English countryside.

One of my all time favorite quotes is from F. Scott Fitzgerald, who said, “That is part of the beauty of literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.” I’m becoming an English major because I’m a word nerd. I am completely obsessed with the power of words. They have always been a major part of my life, whether they were coming from my mouth or from the pen. I believe that words have a special power to touch the hearts of others, resonating deep within them and allowing them to connect with others.

To me, nothing is better than the feeling you get after reading a book that has left you utterly speechless or finally writing a poem just right. I could spend hours discussing Shakespeare or England or a new poem I heard in class the other day. Red pen on white paper is one of my favorite things. John Keating in Dead Poets Society was speaking to me when he said, “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

One of my favorite books is William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury.

There is a pink and blue set of “Fun With Dick and Jane” that sits on the bookcases in my family room. Although now they are rarely touched, fifteen years ago they were my absolute favorites. A few weeks before I started kindergarten, my mother introduced me to the written word, and my summer adventures with Dick, Jane, Sally, and Spot plunged me head first into the freedom reading brings.

I was the child who was grounded from reading. My parents had to wrestle my copies of the Harry Potter series away from me as punishment for neglecting my chores. I’m also pretty sure the reason my eyesight is so terrible (as in a “-7.5 prescription in both eyes” kind of terrible) is because a large portion of my reading was done under my comforter with a flashlight I had stolen from my father’s toolbox. And I haven’t exactly grown out of this habit either – my roommates will often walk into my room to find me reading a novel late into the night after all my other coursework has been completed (and they, like my mother, tell me to go to bed).

As I’ve grown, I’ve accumulated additional “favorites” and along the way realized that literature has the power to literally change lives. It makes our humanity more accessible, proves to us that the human experience, while unique, is a collective one, and because of this, reassures us that we are never truly alone. Being an English major allows me to explore this facet of the human race on an intimate level – and I love it.

One of my favorite books is “Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man” by Fanny Flagg

Hi, guys! I’m from Durham NC. I love to sing and play guitar as well as read and write. I don’t have an inspiring story as to how I came to decide to be an English major. I originally wanted to be an exotic animal vet but I realized that my allergy to cats may make my experience at vet school uncomfortable to say the least. So I turned to my other love, reading and writing. I am currently working towards finishing my first novel and at that time I will have the opportunity to publish it with the help of a former creative writing teacher. I am not good enough of a writer, in my opinion, to be an author as a career. Instead I aspire to eventually receive my Ph.D to teach literature at a university, specifically 19th century American lit.

One of my favorite books is The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to be a writer. My first stories were always written in bright colors with horrendous spelling, but they were mine nonetheless. That pastime evolved into a passion for the English language, and I read books constantly, as well as brainstormed ideas and characters for books I wanted to write. What I’ve wanted to do in the English field has varied throughout the years, and I even dabbled with the idea of dropping that whim altogether and pursuing psychology. Now, though, I’ve decided that I want to share my love for English with the world, and I hope to move to Italy to teach it in a school there.

One of my favorite books is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

Hello, I’m Jenna Kirchhoefer

I am a lover of libraries, chocolate, anything Austen, and ugly Christmas sweaters… and I’m an English major!

No big deal, just chilling in my favorite yellow field in England.

When packing up for college, I brought ONE novel with me. ONE!!! Any guesses? Now, as a book-lover, it would seem rather callous of me to leave my other piles of books behind. Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. As a member of an American military family, I graduated from high school in Germany. Packing for college with limited space therefore proved to be a bit of a struggle, and as it turned out, only one book could possibly fit in my suitcase. Have you taken a guess yet at what that book might have been?

Yes, it was a well-marked, well-loved copy of Pride and Prejudice, and the decision wasn’t a difficult one. What can I say? I have been an honest fan of Austen and her distinctive era ever since I can remember, and have always looked forward to pursuing deeper study of the English language and the literature that so defines it. Libraries make me go weak at the knees, and a sentence with innovative syntax just might make me swoon. 🙂 I also enjoy poetry and lyrics and write plenty of my own, and hope to be meeting many of you fellow English majors soon!

One of my favorite books is Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings.

Hello, I am Camilla Coronado

“Writing” has been a synonym for “living” as long as I can remember. Sometimes I read until I can’t see anymore and then dream about it later. One day I woke up and decided to be an author.

Hi, I’m Rachael Rackley

For as long as I can remember I have always been reading and creating new stories. While other kids wanted to play sports, I wanted to run to the library or book store and read a new book. While other kids spent hours playing Webkinz online, I spent hours typing out ideas on Microsoft Word for potential future novels. My mind has never stopped running with new ideas for stories, and neither has my dream for becoming a great writer one day.

As a brand new freshman at BYU I will work hard to not only evolve as a writer, but also as a person. I strongly believe that until I achieve both of these goals, my dream of becoming a great writer will never be accomplished.

Writing to me is not busy work; it is my passion and joy in this life. As I work to achieve my goals I hope I can inspire other people to follow their own dreams as well. After all, I have found that the greatest joys in this life are simply by helping other people. And if I can do that through my writing, even if it is for one person, then I know I have succeeded.

One of my favorite books is Lois Lowry’s The Giver.

Hi, I’m Abbie

When I first learned to read, my whole world changed. I was finally granted access to this secret and incredible society of books, and I was honestly angry at my mom for not teaching me sooner. Street signs and restaurant menus contained meaning for the first time. It was that moment, when my life of hieroglyphs became comprehensible, that I knew reading would come to characterize my very identity. During car rides, no matter how far, I would read every piece of information and try to win each passenger over by my seemingly magnificent skills. Even today I am floored when people aren’t as awed by literature as I am.

One of my favorite books is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

It’s funny I’ve ended up as an English major, because I hated learning to read. Obviously I like it now, but only because my mom changed my mind. She taught me that by putting the words I was learning together, I could make stories of my own. She taught me to write, and it was magic. I loved everything to do with English after that. The promise of creating something new was the perfect motivation. It still is, actually. It’s why I’m an English major. That and I love to read (now). I think that’s about it.

One of my favorite books is Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart.
