Hi, I’m Jenny Keeton

I’m a Missourian, a debater, a master of sarcasm, and a movie aficionado. And I’m an English major.

My love for literature and analyzing that literature started when I was ten. A friend and I had a competition to see who could read more books. Unfortunately, I was not victorious, but the experience opened me up to reading. I have been blessed with good friends that would push me to read their favorite books, which kept my interests spread. While it may take me a little longer to read a book than others, I enjoy reading.

The love for analysis came later, when I was a high school debater. We would have to read through evidence quickly and get to the root of it. It became not only helpful when reading a book or poetry, but it also became fulfilling, knowing the meaning of the book and why it was written.

I’m excited to be joining you as an English major. Best of luck and I hope to meet you soon!

One of my favorite books is John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.

Hi, I’m Emily Hubbard

I’m a book blogger, a home cook, a newlywed, and a soon-to-be mom. And I’m an English major.

I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer someday, so I knew from the moment I walked onto BYU campus that I wanted to be an English major. I loved reading classics for my major, so a couple years ago I started a book blog called Classics and Beyond. I’ve been married for more than a year and a half to my husband, Doug, who likes cars and movies but doesn’t like chocolate, which forever wounds my chocolate-loving heart. I’m expecting a little girl in December (which is also when I’ll hopefully graduate), and I’m determined to raise her to love books…and chocolate.

One of my favorite books is The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot

Hi! I’m Ruth!

I’m a social media addict who loves the ocean and her friends, and I’m and English Major.

My name is Ruth and I’m from the beautiful PNW. That’s Pacific North West for those of you not familiar with the upper left USA. I graduated from a high school in Mount Vernon, WA and I have a passion for learning. I love reading and that’s why I want to major in English. I want to become a doctor which might seem strange, but it’s what I want to do. I have two sisters and a wonderful mother who let the missionaries into our house four years ago. I’m a convert to the LDS church and I don’t think I would change that for the world. I love talking to people and being on social media. I think I’m a pretty great person and I work hard. That’s about it.

One of my favorite books is J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye

I love books. I love reading books so much that I eventually figured I should probably start the long road to writing a few, although I’m at the very beginning. My favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson and Orson Scott Card, my favorite genres fantasy and sci-fi. It amazes me how well literature can connect distant, awkward human beings throughout the ages. Some of my best friends were discovered by finding out we enjoyed the same books. I enjoy memorizing pieces of old or modern poetry to casually insert into everyday life… Nobody knows how to romance like Shakespeare, so why not let him help me out? “How like a winter hath my absence been from thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year…” Big, fat novels with tiny print prove a fatal attraction, and if I’m not carrying one around with me at all times, then there’s a very good reason for it. Finally, I just love the blending of fascinating and unique ideas that proves timeless and infinitely shareable found in paper and ink. Books change and illuminate lives. I slowly wring out short stories, scripts, and poems for practice and fun every day, but my real baby is still in the works, an fantasy epic that I hope will delight everyone that reads it!

One of my favorite books is Brandon Sanderson’s Words of Radiance.

Through my wonderful AP and honors English classes in high school, I decided that English was the place for me. Poetry is one of my passions whether it be reading or writing. Though I’m not very good at it yet, you can check out some of my poems on Power Poetry. I’ve been on a kick for World War II novels and read Unbroken and The Book Thief this summer–both of which I highly recommend. I’m so excited to go through the English program here at BYU!

One of my favorite books is Caleb Carr’s The Alienist.

Bonjour, I’m Emma Jarvis!

I’m a Frenchie, social media addict, treat enthusiast, die-hard Arizonian and wanna-be Southerner, and I’m an English Major

Emma Jarvis in Paris

I love Paris. And that’s an understatement.

Like most English majors, I’ve always been addicted to reading. It was my junior year AP English teacher, Ms. Creaser, who cemented my need to be an English Major. I had never been in a class as intellectually stimulating as that class, and as I figured out intense life questions through writing, I knew there was no other option for me in college. I’ve been disillusioned from time to time with the major, wondering if I would enjoy advertising or graphic design more, but at the end of the day, I sit in Dr. Cutchins‘s class and puzzle over Henry James, or listen to Dr. Hall rant as the class laughs, and I know I’ve picked the right major.

One of my favorite books is Henry James’s Daisy Miller.

Since I was little I would sit for hours by myself and tell stories with miniature figurines, and when figurines weren’t available I would use socks. By the time I was 7 I was writing my stories and by the time I was 10 I kept a journal. When I was 12 I started with poetry. Though I couldn’t recite my alphabet until 1st grade by the end of that year my teacher was asking for me to be placed a grade ahead in English. I love to read, but not as much as I enjoy writing. Writing has always had a calming influence on me. I am currently working on a novel and am 75 pages in. When I am not writing, I enjoy running, singing, playing my French Horn, organizing and cleaning (yes, I actually enjoy that) and spending time with my sister (a math major at BYU).

One of my favorite books is Lois Lowry’s The Giver.

Hello, I’m Tanner Ellsworth

I’m a pre-med student, a musician, a lover of sushi and jazz, and I’m an English major.

I am an English major because I am passionate about understanding others. In my opinion, no other field of study provides as broad a view of humanity, culture, and global perspective. I love that I can more deeply understand the difficulties of mental illness and then gain a perspective of oppressed women in Afghanistan through the voices in literature. Because of literature, I have felt the connection of emotion and experience that is a common thread in great writing. Being an English major has given me the perspective and empathy that I hoped to gain through higher education. I’ve loved every class and never looked back!

One of my favorite books is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Hi, I’m Courtney Green.

I’m a hiker, an army brat, a beach bum, and a lover of classic literature. And I’m an English major.

Having lunch at Hooper Springs, a hometown hangout.

I have always had a strong passion for books and reading. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve known that whatever I’m going to do in this life, it has to do with reading. Of course, back when I was younger, that desire was limited to “I’m going to grow up and read books all day, every day and live with mommy and daddy!” As I’ve grown older, while my love for all books hasn’t decreased, I’ve grown more attached to classic literature. I read Pride and Prejudice in Eighth Grade and completely fell in love with that era. They just had a certain way of writing and expressing themselves that I feel has been lost over time. I spend almost every free moment I have reading and rereading these amazing novels that have shaped my high school years. Someday, I hope to go out there and discover those amazing novels out there and bring them to light!

One of my favorite books is Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson.

Hello, I’m Erin Nightingale

I’m a musician, a composer, a novelist, a poet, a book lover, an onomast . . . and I’m an English Major.

Really, I don’t know where I’d be without writing. I am blind, but when I was younger I could see better, and back then I considered myself an artist. I was constantly drawing, painting, and sculpting. I was fairly certain that art would be in my future. But I lost most of my sight when I was ten years old, and could no longer see to draw. Therefore, I had to find new ways of doing art. I taught myself how to play the piano, and have been composing music for eight years. But this wasn’t enough. Soon I discovered the world of words, and began writing poems and novels. I have six completed novels and over thirty poems to date. I’ve been told that my writing style is very colorful. Another one of my loves is teaching. I m studying currently to become an English teacher. It is in this way that art, in one form or another, has made it into my future, and will continue to be a vital part of what makes me me forever.

One of my favorite books is Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
